Backlit Dust Lanes

  • Backlit Dust Lanes. The giant galaxy NGC 7049 lies 100 million light years away from Earth in
  • the constellation of Indus, in the southern sky. It measures approximately 150,000 light-years
  •  across, or about 1.5 times wider than the Milky Way. The dust lanes, which appear as a lacy web,
  • are dramatically backlit by the millions of stars in the halo of NGC 7049
